Marlow House

Marlow, UK. 2026

Marlow House is the refurbishment and extension of a Victorian family home in the Marlow Conservation Area.

The existing house had generous period rooms, but the layout had become fragmented over time, with a series of disconnected spaces at the rear and limited connection to the garden. Our brief was to bring the house up to the standard of modern family life, while respecting the character of the original building and its sensitive conservation area setting.

The design removes a later detached garage that crowded the side of the house and detracted from the street scene. In its place, a carefully scaled single-storey extension creates a more open and welcoming relationship between the house, the garden and the wider streetscape.

Internally, the plan has been reorganised around a new sequence of kitchen, dining and living spaces, arranged to bring daylight deep into the home and improve everyday flow. A courtyard and large sliding doors create a stronger connection to the garden, giving the family brighter, more generous spaces for daily life.

Externally, the extension is designed to sit quietly alongside the original house. Red brick relates to the established character of Claremont Road, while the refined zinc roof gives the new work a contemporary but restrained identity. Traditional timber detailing to the porch helps retain the familiar character of the house from the street.

The result is a considered transformation of a period home: more practical, more open and better connected to its garden, while preserving the qualities that make the house and its conservation area setting special.
