Cemetery House
London, UK. 2026
Cemetery House is the renovation and extension of a Grade II listed Gothic Victorian lodge set within the unique landscape of Paddington Old Cemetery. The clients were drawn to the building’s extraordinary sense of stillness and seclusion, and wanted to preserve its quiet, almost ecclesiastical character while transforming it into a warm and highly personal family home.
Our approach was to work through a series of precise and carefully judged interventions that would bring clarity, light and openness to the existing house without losing its intimacy or sense of retreat. New rear extensions and a full internal reconfiguration create a stronger relationship between the principal living spaces and the garden, while a new central axis reorganises the plan and establishes a calm sequence of connected spaces throughout.
Materiality was central to achieving the clients’ vision. A palette of oak, plaster, brick, travertine and microcement introduces warmth, texture and softness, sitting comfortably alongside the lodge’s original vaulted ceilings, exposed rafters and Gothic proportions. The result is a home that feels serene, tactile and timeless, one that honours the spirit of the original building while reflecting the clients’ love of places with patina, depth and authenticity.
